Matthew is an anomaly in the art world as his perpetual creativity and drive to push the boundaries of innovation has enabled him to not only develop a unique style of graphic art but also to develop multiple technologies and create global ventures across a wide range of industries including audio, nuclear energy, cinema, gaming, transport, big data, health and the space sector.
So far his businesses and technology career has spanned four decades, yet over this period he has been simultaneously developing his creative skills and style for his expressive graphic art, which until early 2021, he had kept hidden.
Inspired from a young age by his grandmother, the late renowned New Zealand sculptor Ria Bancroft and growing up in a very creative and supportive family Matthew was encouraged to start exploring his graphic art, music and functional sculptures.
FORM & FUNCTION
In 1983 at twelve years old he started his loudspeaker manufacturing business which became a multi-disciplinary engineering company supplying innovative audio products for home and cinema. Through this journey into sound Matthew explored the complex relationship between aesthetic form and optimum function through many hundreds of designs of loudspeakers, electronic equipment and even automobiles.
The pinnacle of this era of work is his 2007 - 2.3m tall, USD140k "Prerenaissance" loudspeaker, which, due to it's design has been featured in multiple magazines and books across the globe.

In 2009 Matthew developed the car design study call the 'Carvus'. The aim of this project was to explore liberating car design from the limitations of four wheels by using forty small self powered and steerable wheels (5 wide x 8 long).
MUSIC
Matthew studied music composition and art history at Otago University and also experimented in 'art house' film making. In 1991 he composed music for string quartets, but since the mid 1990's all his music has been in the electronic medium.

In 2002/2003 he produced two ambient remixes for the ethereal music of Balligomingo, with the 'Marooned Arvus coral sea mix' having such an impact on the group that they restructured their original song to incorporate the Arvus elements into their final version.

In 2010 Matthew was commissioned to produce the music motion title music for the Chinese cinema chain Lumiere Pavilions. He had 15 seconds to convey their unique cinema branding in his music. An interesting fact is that given Lumiere's large number of screens across China, it was calculated that from 2011 to 2013 it is possible that this was the most played piece of music in China.

Though most of his music is unreleased Matthew is currently working on two albums, one of which is a collaboration while the other a psychedelic chill out journey exploring the 3rd Dimension using 16 channels of Dolby Atmos®.
Both albums are planned for a late 2022 release.

GRAPHIC ART
Throughout his adult life Matthew has been producing graphic art, but he did not share these early works with anyone, as at the time he felt this was not a pastime he could actively pursue while raising a family and growing his various business ventures.
However as his children became adults and started on their own journeys he found a renewed creative freedom
and an innate need to create and further develop is own artistic voice.
The graphic art of Arvus Attamesa is Matthew's most personal and intimate form of artist expression and 2020 was the year where he was able to devote large amounts of time, mental and spiritual energy to not only refine his artistic skills, but to also explore within his heart what he wanted to express.
