BODY & VASE
A study in six pieces
These pieces are an exploration of our personal strength & vulnerability and how they are inextricably linked.
Each piece is named after one of the six naturally occurring noble gases which,
because of their perfect atomic balance have very low chemical reactivity.
The vase is a symbol for the balance we must all learn to achieve so we can be the most honest expression of ourselves.
I believe that when we accomplish this state, we coexist on all levels with our inner and outer realms
and impact our environment at an atomic level.

For me this piece set the language and intent of the whole series.
I started out wanting to convey a pose that was only possible through years of strict discipline and dedication; yet as I worked on it over time, the passion and innate energy required also needed to be expressed.
The vase could only be balanced on her knee if this ballerina could remain still, yet she is pressing down on her hands and legs with incredible force. I actually tried this pose myself!...and what I found is a painful amount of weight is put on the thumbs, and so I tried to express this in the floor underneath them.
I wanted the colour language of her body to heighten that tension between grace, strength and balance.
As she is radiating energy in the green/yellow aura and it's impacting her environment I spent much time on the colours and textures around her. I wanted these elements to create a 'sympathetic zone'.....and through this process I also discovered that she needed a great deal of headroom above her.

This piece speaks to the primal nature in us all.
My aim here was to show a man reaching deep into this instinctive element of himself
to be able to hold this extremely difficult yoga pose called Astavakrasana.
He is intently focused on his vase and pulling its energy up into his feet
almost morphing his environment at quantum level making an increasingly organic feedback-loop.

We all gotta 'ave fun and go crazy sometimes.
With this piece I wanted to capture a very brief moment of something that could only be reached with tremendous energy input.
This image captures the 'apex' of a wild action and to balance it all on a pottery vase is even more difficult!
Much attention was spent on the colours and the environment so that the energy of the body could been seen to radiate while also impacting the surroundings.
To balance work with play nurtures our spirits and renews our sense of hope.

personal notes on Krypton from Arvus Attamesa
I started with the concept of a powerful, kneeling, yet humble figure with the aim of expressing, that even in the 'struggles of life' there is always a small task that somehow you have to manage and balance at the same time.
The aim was to create a scene that looked almost ancient, monolithic and classical without looking Greek, Egyptian, etc,so I took the architectural elements from a simple pottery vase, and reinforced it with the downward looking male head.
I also wanted a futuristic feel to it so the golden figure is both organic and mechanical; which we ALL feel like at stages when our work just 'has' to be done!
Sometimes life calls us to be super human robots, balancing important and insignificant tasks
and all we can do is just work our way through it all.
also...Krypton was conceived as partnering with a female counterpoint...Xenon

I had initially designed the body in late 2021 and was happy with it but I could not seem to create a setting that complemented this very unusual form, so I worked on completing Krypton and left this alone for about 8 months.
As the view of the female figure is side-on, a symmetrical setting as like Krypton did not seem to work, so I chose to use the side view of the head as the inspiration.
The shape of the 'ball with protrusion' of the head with nose became very interesting to me and its now reflected in the architecture, the vase, the heel and even in the hips.
